Elmina is a fishing port on the south coast of Ghana. It is known for its beaches and for its role in the former transatlantic slave trade.

ELMINA CITY

Elmina is a city near Cape Coast. Its name comes from the Portuguese word for "Mine". The gold found in these mines are also the origin of the name "Gold Coast", which was the previous name of Ghana during the British colonization.

Elmina Castle was erected by the Portuguese colons in 1482 as São Jorge da Mina Castle (St. George Castle), also known simply as Mina or Feitoria da Mina. It was mainly used for the purpose of slave trading.

Fort Coenraadsburg or Conraadsburg, also known as Fort Sao Jago da Mina, is a fort built in 1652 to protect the Elmina castle from attacks.
