Cairo, Egypt’s sprawling capital, is set on the Nile River. At its heart is Tahrir Square and the vast Egyptian Museum, a trove of antiquities including royal mummies and gilded King Tutankhamun artifacts. Nearby, Giza is the site of the iconic pyramids and the Great Sphinx, dating to the 26th century BC. In Gezira Island’s leafy Zamalek district, 187m Cairo Tower affords panoramic city views.

ZAMALEK AND SURROUNDINGS
Zamalek is an affluent district of western Cairo encompassing the northern portion of Gezira Island in the Nile River. The quiet, leafy streets and 19th-century apartment blocks and villas make this one of the most attractive parts of the city and a favored residential location. It is also the district of many fine restaurants, bars and cafes, including traditional open-air ahwas and European cappuccino bars.
