GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Quito, Ecuador's capital, sits high in the Andean foothills at an altitude of 2,850m. Constructed on the foundations of an ancient Incan city, it is known for its well-preserved colonial center, rich with 16th- and 17th-century churches and other structures blending European, Moorish and indigenous styles. These include the cathedral in the Plaza Grande square, and the ultra-ornate Compañia de Jesús Jesuit church.

CATEDRAL METROPOLITANA DE QUITO

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Quito, known simply as La Catedral, is the main Catholic church in Quito.

CONVENTO Y MUSEO DE SAN FRANCISCO

The Church and Monastery of St. Francis, commonly known as el San Francisco, is a 16th-century Roman Catholic complex in Quito. It fronts onto its namesake Plaza de San Francisco. The imposing structure has the distinction of being the largest architectural ensemble among the historical structures of colonial Latin America and for this reason is sometimes known as ""El Escorial of the New World"".

EL SAGRARIO CHURCH

La Iglesia de El Sagrario is a large 17th century chapel in Quito. It is attached to the 16th century Quito Cathedral, but is generally accessed separately.

IGLESIA DE LA COMPANIA DE JESUS

The Church of the Society of Jesus, known colloquially as la Compañía, is a Jesuit church in Quito. It is among the best-known churches in Quito because of its large central nave, which is profusely decorated with gold leaves, gilded plaster and wood carvings.

IGLESIA DE LA MERCED

The Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Merced is located in the Ecuadorian capital Quito. The white building has five domes and a square tower. The building is decorated with Incan and Moorish inscriptions. Construction started in 1701.

IGLESIA SANTA TERESITA (MARISCAL)

The Iglesia Santa Teresita is in the Mariscal neighborhood of Quito. ""La Mariscal"" is located between the Colon and Patria Avenues. In this area you find many bars, discos, coffeshops, café nets, restaurants, cultural centers, and live music.

The church and monastery of El Carmen Alto is a Catholic monastery of convent, church and chapels erected in the Historical Center of Quito.

PLAZA GRANDE (INDEPENDENCE SQUARE)

Independence Square is the principal and central public square of Quito, Ecuador. This is the central square of the city and one of the symbols of the executive power of the nation.

TELEFERICO

The Teleférico is a gondola lift in Quito, running from the edge of the city centre up the east side of the Pichincha Volcano to the lookout Cruz Loma. It is one of the highest aerial lifts in the world.
