GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Ciudad Colonial is the historic central neighborhood of Santo Domingo and the oldest permanent European settlement of the New World. It has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is colloquially known as ""Zona Colonial"".

ALCAZAR DEL COLON

The Alcázar de Colón, or Columbus Alcazar, is the oldest Viceregal residence in the Americas, and is part of the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo World Heritage Site.

CATEDRALE DE AMERICA

The Cathedral of Santa María la Menor, located in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo, is dedicated to St. Mary of the Incarnation. It is the oldest cathedral in the Americas, as its construction begun in 1512 and was completed in 1540. The Cathedral is fronted with a golden-tinted coral limestone façade, and it combines elements of both Gothic and Baroque with some lavish plateresque styles as exemplified by the high altar chiseled out of silver. It also contains an art collection of ancient woodcarvings, furnishings, funerary monuments, silver, and jewelry.

EL CONDE

Calle El Conde is an old street in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo. It is currently the only pedestrian street in town, filled with shops, hotels and restaurants. The first city hall and the first cathedral of the Americas are located here.

The Museo de las Casas Reales is one of the important cultural monuments built during the colonial era in the Dominican Republic.

HISTORICAL CENTER

PANTEON DE LA PATRIA

The National Pantheon was built in the years 1714-1746 by the Spaniard Geronimo Quezada y Garçon and was originally a Jesuit church. The structure was constructed in the neoclassic-renaissance style.

PARQUE COLON

Parque Colon is the main square of the Ciudad Colonial. In its center stands a late-19th Christopher Columbus, in whose honor the square was renamed in 1887. Previously the square was known as Plaza Mayor.

RUINAS DE SAN FRANCISCO

The Ruinas de San Francisco is a monastery that was built around 1508, with the arrival of the Franciscan fathers. The ruin is one of the most important of the Colonial Town.

RUINS OF HOSPITAL SAN NICOLA DI BARI

Preserved as a ruin, the Hospital San Nicolás de Bari is the oldest hospital built in the Americas. It shows a combination of Gothic and Renaissance elements, with some considerable Mudéjar influence.
