The history of the Temple of Our Lady of the Mercedes dates back to the beginning of the 17th century when the Mercedarian Order arrived in Pasto and erected a temple, recognized in America by its portal supported by golden lions. It venerated the image of the Virgen de las Mercedes, patroness of the capital of the department of Nariño.
