Dumaguete

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Dumaguete City is the capital of the province of Negros Oriental, in the southern Philippines. The waterfront Rizal Boulevard is backed by bars and restaurants. Opposite the Quezon Park is the 19th-century St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral and its belfry, the Campanario de Dumaguete.

BELFRY (DUMAGUETE BELL TOWER)

The Dumaguete Belfry is the oldest known Belfry in the province. Standing next to the majestic St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral, it still towers above the nearby buildings like a deacon that it once was.

CATHEDRAL ST. CATHERINE OF ALEXANDRIA

The St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral is also referred to as the Dumaguete Cathedral. Outside the church are four stone pillars which uphold the entrance gate; standing atop these pillars are four statues of Saint Matthews, Saint Mark, and the churches veneer, Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

SILLIMAN

The Silliman University is a private research university in Dumaguete. Established in 1901 as Silliman Institute by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions, it is the first American university in the entire Asian continent.
