GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Maldonado is the capital of the Maldonado Department of Uruguay. It is located on Route 39 and shares borders with Punta del Este to the south. East of the city flows the stream Arroyo Maldonado, from which the town gets its name.

CATEDRAL DE SAN FERNANDO DE MALDONADO

The Cathedral of Saint Ferdinand of Maldonado is the main church of Maldonado. It was built in 1895 in neoclassic style.

HISTORICAL CENTER

Maldonado was sacked by British forces in 1806, but many colonial buildings and ruins of Spanish fortifications remain. Especially noteworthy are the watchtower (El Vigía), the parish church, and the Mazzoni Museum.
