GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Huacachina is a desert oasis and tiny village just west of the city of Ica in southwestern Peru. At its center are the green waters of the Huacachina Lagoon, ringed by palm trees and thought to have therapeutic properties. The lagoon's shores are dotted with bars and clubs. Dune buggies run across the high, rolling sand dunes surrounding the village.

DUNE BUGGY

There are several agencies in Huacachina offering rides in 4x4 buggy vehicles on the sand dunes.

ICA

The city of Ica is the capital of the Ica Region in southern Peru, about 300 km south of Lima. Further south along the Pan-American Highway lies the city of Nazca.

OASIS

Huacachina is built around a small natural lake in the desert. Called the "oasis of America", it serves as a resort for local families from the nearby city of Ica.

SANDBOARDING IN THE DUNES

Sandboarding is a sport involving a ride across or down a sand dune while standing with both feet strapped to a board. Many locals rent their boards to tourists.
