FABIO'S REVIEW
Phnom Penh is not a tourist town, but there are a few interesting spots to visit: if you have only one day before going to Angkor, check out the Killing Fields and the Sisowath quay area (featuring among others the Royal Palace and the Ounalom temple).
LOCATIONS EXPERIENCED
INDEPENDENCE SQUARE AREA
The Independence Square is located in the center of Phnom Penh. The Independence Monument was built in 1958 for Cambodia's independence from France in 1953: it stands on the intersection of Norodom Boulevard and Sihanouk Boulevard in the centre of the city. It is in the form of a lotus-shaped stupa, of the style seen at the great Khmer temple at Angkor Wat and other Khmer historical sites. The Independence Monument was designed by the Cambodian architect Vann Molyvann.
ROYAL PALACE
The Phnom Penh Royal Palace is a complex of buildings which serves as the royal residence of the king of Cambodia. The complex is divided by walls into four main compounds: on the south side is the Silver Pagoda, on the north side is the Khemarin Palace; the central compound contains the Throne Hall and to the west is the private sector or the Inner Court. The buildings of the palace were built gradually over time, and some were dismantled and rebuilt as late as the 1960s. But some older buildings dates back to the 19th century.
