GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Konya is a city south of Ankara in Turkey’s Central Anatolia region. It is a pilgrimage destination for Sufis, focused on the tomb of the founder of the Mevlana order, Jelaleddin Rumi, in the Mevlana Museum. Sema whirling dervish ceremonies take place at the Mevlana Cultural Center, east of the museum. Nearby, the 12th-century Alaeddin Mosque is surrounded by the green parks of Alaeddin Hill.

LOCATIONS EXPERIENCED

ALAEDDIN TEPPESI

Alaeddin Tepesi is a 20-meter high hill in Konya: the archaeological excavations carried out by Turkish Historical Society in 1941 showed that the first settlement on the hill goes back to 3000 BC. Today, it is a recreation area.

KONYA MOSQUES

There are dozens of mosques in Konya – the most popular are the Azizia, Selimiye Masjid, Hacıveyisza and Serafeddin mosques.

MEVLANA CULTURAL CENTER

The Mevlana Cultural Center is a newly-built building that houses a huge auditorium, art galleries and a book store.

MEVLANA MUSEUM

The Mevlâna Museum, located in Konya, is the mausoleum of Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, a Persian Sufi mystic also known as Mevlâna or Rumi. It was also the dervish lodge of the Mevlevi order, better known as the ""whirling dervishes"".
