GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Istanbul is a major city in Turkey that straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait. Its Old City reflects cultural influences of the many empires that once ruled here. In the Sultanahmet district, the open-air, Roman-era Hippodrome was for centuries the site of chariot races. The iconic Byzantine Hagia Sophia features a soaring 6th-century dome and rare Christian mosaics.

ARTER SPACE FOR ART (SALT ULUS EXHIBITIONS)

Salt Ulus exhibitions negotiated unconventional venues as opposed to galleries, cultural centers or historical buildings. The exhibition seeks to provide an overview of collective and non-commercial initiatives by artists who focused on collaboration and the exchange of ideas during the early ‘90s.

AZIZ MAHMUD UDAYI VAKFI (AND CITY WALLS)

The Aziz Mahmut Hudayi Mosque was built for Aziz Mahmut Huyadi, who served as Qadi in Edirne, Egypt, Sham (Syria), and Bursa. He died in Istanbul and is buried next to his mosque.

GALATA BRIDGE

The Galata Bridge is a bridge that spans the Golden Horn in Istanbul.

GALATA TOWER

The Galata Tower, called Christea Turris by the Genoese, is a medieval stone tower in the Galata/Karaköy quarter of Istanbul, just to the north of the Golden Horn's junction with the Bosphorus.

GOLDEN HORN RIVERSIDE

The Golden Horn, also known by its modern Turkish name as Haliç, is a major urban waterway and the primary inlet of the Bosphorus in Istanbul. This prominent body of water is a horn-shaped estuary that joins the Bosphorus Strait at the point where the strait meets the Sea of Marmara.

ISTANBUL BAZAARS

The markets and bazaars in Istanbul are scattered all over the city. The most famous ones (for tourists) are the Grand Bazaar and the Egyptian Spices Bazaar. Other smaller markets sell consumer goods for locals.

ISTANBUL CHURCHES

Despite being predominantly a Muslim country, there are several historical churches to visit in Istanbul.

Istanbul has about 3000 mosques! Most can be freely visited, independently from your religion.

İstiklal Avenue (or Istiklal Street) is one of the most famous avenues in Istanbul, visited by nearly 3 million people during the weekends.
