GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic and one of the Caribbean's oldest cities. Its walled, cobblestoned historic core, the Zona Colonial, has buildings that date to the 1500s, including the cathedral, which was the first built in the New World. On the cafe-lined Plaza de España is the Alcázar de Colón palace, now one of the city’s main museums, displaying notable medieval and Renaissance art.

Avenida Espana is lined with cafés and restaurants, and is very busy on weekend nights.

CIUDAD COLONIAL

Ciudad Colonial is the historic central neighborhood of Santo Domingo and the oldest permanent European settlement of the New World. It has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is colloquially known as ""Zona Colonial"".

EL FARO

The Columbus Lighthouse is a monument located in Santo Domingo Este, in tribute to Christopher Columbus.

LOS 3 OJOS

Los Tres Ojos is the name given to a 50-Yard open-air limestone cave located in the Mirador del Este park, in Santo Domingo.

MALECON

The Malecon is the capital’s famous oceanfront promenade. It starts within the Zona Colonial at the mouth of the Río Ozama, where an intact section of the old city wall leads to the seventeenth-century San José Fort.
