HO PHRA KAEW (HAW PHRA KAEW)

Haw Phra Kaew (a.k.a. Ho Prakeo / Hor Pha Keo), is a former Bhuddist temple in Vientiane, located near the more famous Wat Si Saket.

PATUXAI

The Patuxai, built between 1957 and 1968, is dedicated to those who fought in the struggle for independence from France.

THAT DAM STUPA

The That Dam is a large stupa located in Vientiane. Many Laotians believe it is inhabited by a seven-headed nāga (spirit) who tried to protect them from an invasion by the Siamese army in 1827.

WAT INPENG

The Wat Inpeng is an active temple (with resident monks) built in the 16th century. It contains beautiful murals, a library building, a small chapel and several other Buddhist structures. An elaborate entrance gate with green seven-headed Naga snakes guards the temple.

WAT MIXAI

Wat Mixai, or the Temple of Victory, was built during the reign of King Sai Setthathirat (1550-1571) to celebrate the victory over the Burmese troops during the 16th century Lao-Burma war. It was renovated in the early 1900s and adopted a Central Thai style architecture.

WAT ONG TEU

Wat Ong Teu Mahawihan is one of many Buddhist monasteries in Vientiane. It features the large, bronze "Phra Ong Teu" Buddha image, the largest in Vientiane.

WAT OUP MOUNG

A quiet Buddhist temple in Vientiane (not part of the tourist routes), located in Route de Luang Prabang (km 3).

WAT SI MUANG

Wat Si Muang (Wat Simuong) is a Buddhist temple built in 1563. Located on the road leading from the Friendship Bridge to Thailand, it was built on the ruins of a Khmer Empire Hindu shrine, the remains of which can be seen behind the ordination hall.

WAT SI SAKET

Wat Si Saket is a Buddhist temple built in the Siamese style (with a surrounding terrace and an ornate five-tiered roof), rather than in the Lao style. It is situated on Lan Xang Road, on the corner with Setthathirat Road.
