GENERAL DESCRIPTION

San Felipe de Puerto Plata is the capital of the Puerto Plata province, on the Dominican Republic’s Atlantic north coast. The city is best known for its beaches. Playa Dorada’s lengthy beachfront is backed by resorts and an 18-hole golf course. The city’s old colonial-era center is dominated by the 16th-century Fortaleza San Felipe, a Spanish fortress that now houses historical and military artifacts.

The city of Puerto Plata is characterized by its dominant Victorian architecture, combined with various other styles, giving a varied character to the urban development. The Spanish fort is the main colonial monument of the city.

FARO LA PUNTILLA

El Faro once served as a beacon for ships traversing the Atlantic. The lighthouse functioned through a system of revolving light and shadows given off by a kerosene lamp.

FORTALEZA SAN FELIPE

The Fortaleza San Felipe is a historic Spanish fortress located near the center of Puerto Plata. Is also known as El Morro de San Felipe and was used to protect the city from pirates and corsairs.

ISABEL DE TORRES MOUNTAIN

The mountain ""Isabel de Torres"" features a scenic cable car, with a botanical garden and a Rio-like Christ statue on top.

MALECON (PLAYA LONG BEACH)

The completely paved Malecón (also known as Av. General Luperón and Av. Circunvalación Norte) runs along the Puerto Plata shore. There are severaò restaurants, as well as a half-dozen beachside shacks selling food and drinks on Long Beach, the main city beach.

OCEAN WORLD

A water park featuring multiple animal encounters, like swimming with sharks & dolphins, watching sea lions and a variety of birds.

PLAZA INDEPENDENCIA

Plaza Independencia is the heart of Puerto Plata, a typical large square built during the Spanish colonization.

SCOOTERS RACING

You can see (and bet on) illegal scooters racing every Sunday near Plaza Independencia.
