GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Zipaquirá is a city in central Colombia, northeast of Bogotá. It’s known for its subterranean Salt Cathedral, a church in a vast salt mine featuring the Stations of the Cross carved out of rock salt. Just outside is a monument to miners. The Zipaquirá Archaeological Museum has pre-Columbian artifacts. The Casa del Nobel Gabriel García Márquez is a cultural center in a building where the author studied in the 1940s.

PARQUE PRINCIPAL

Gonzales Forero Square is the epicentre of Zipaquirà, surrounded by beautiful buildings that have conserved their colonial style, and are considered to be national monuments. The square contains a cathedral constructed between 1760 and 1870, with its stone façade, as well as the city hall and the Salinas administration building, with their green republican style roofs.

SALT CATHEDRAL

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is an underground Roman Catholic church built within the tunnels of a salt mine 200 metres underground, in a halite mountain near the town of Zipaquirá.
